Brie Larson Looks Back on Her Dysfunctional Family in First Trailer for ‘The Glass Castle’

Audiences first took notice of Brie Larson’s dramatic talents with 2013’s Short Term 12. Now, after earning her first Oscar and landing the lead in Marvel’s upcoming female-led superhero film, the actress is reuniting with the director who helped bring her into the spotlight.

Destin Daniel Cretton directs Larson once again in The Glass Castle, a family drama based on the best selling memoir by Jeannette Walls. Adapted from Walls’ 2005 book by Cretton and Andrew Lanham (The Shack), the film follows Jeannette as a young girl (Ella Anderson) growing up in poverty with a family that was always on the move. The first trailer jumps between the adult Jeanette, played by Larson, working as a successful journalist, and her younger self. Woody Harrelson portrays Walls’ father, an alcoholic who struggles to keep a job, and Naomi Watts is both de-aged to look like a younger mother, and aged with rugged clothes and ratty hair. In the present day, both of Jeannette’s parents are still without a solid home base and living in New York City as squatters:

People debuted the first trailer this morning. Walls told the magazine that she knew she wanted Larson to play her from the start. When she saw Harrelson in makeup as her father, she started crying. Entertainment Weekly also debuted a set of new photos featuring Harrelson with the young Jeannette, and Larson dressed extra fancy for a Chinese lunch with Watts:

The Glass Castle hits theaters on August 11, making it a likely awards contender. With a late summer release date, that means the movie won’t be making the rounds on the fall festival circuit. It could be such a hit that it gets ahead of the competition to spark early awards conversations, or worse, if it doesn’t fair well it may get buried by the releases that follow. Hard to tell by the first trailer, but if anything a Cretton-Larson reunion is promising.
