Convicted Sex Offender Accused Of Breaking Into Homes Near UA

A convicted sex offender has been accused of breaking into bedrooms of two University of Alabama students .

According to Tuscaloosa Police Captain Brad Mason, two women at separate residences near the UA campus reported to police that they awoke to find a man standing in their bedrooms early Sunday Morning.

In the alleged 1st incident, the woman, 21, told police that she awoke to a man touching her leg at her apartment in the 1400 block of Ninth Street at 5:30 a.m

A short time later in the alleged 2nd incident, (which occurred at a residence in the 600 block of Gene Stallings Ave), another woman, 20, reported that she awoke and saw a man in her bedroom.. The man stole alcoholic beverages and ran, said Captain Mason.

After a brief while, police located Mitchell Dwight Hines, 52, of Northport. The victims and witnesses who were sitting on a porch across from the ninth street house, (the site of the 1st break-in), identified him as the person they had seen, according to Mason.

Back in 2013, Hines was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse against an adult woman.  Also in 1989, he was convicted of attempted first-degree rape of a 25-year-old woman. His criminal history includes drug possession charges and charges for violating residency requirements for sex offenders.
