Flashback Friday: Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

This week, a 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee gets waved up to our spotlight stage for this "B101.7 Flashback Friday!"

The induction ceremony and concert was held recently for this year's class of nominees. You can catch it on HBO. In their first year of eligibility, Nirvana was voted in. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, rather a reminder of how incredibly influential this band has been on a generation. Their grunge sound launched a decade of immense popularity for "alternative rock."

The spotlight is on Nirvana and their 1991 breakthrough song, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It features the vocals of the late Kurt Cobain. The highly praised Cobain was a founding member of the band, lead singer and the primary songwriter. He tragically passed away in 1994 at only 27 years of age. The cause of death is listed as suicide.

At the Hall of Fame induction concert, Joan Jett came out to sing the band's signature song. Jett is known for the 1981 anthem, "I Love Rock and Roll." I'll post it below. Well, she joined Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl on stage for a moving tribute performance. I came across a YouTube video of it, from somebody standing on the side of the stage.
