It’s about time. After months of waiting, the first (red band!) trailer for Free Fire has arrived on the heels of last night’s midnight premiere at TIFF. The latest thriller from Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise) features an all-star roster, including Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer and Wheatley favorite Michael Smiley in the story of an arms deal gone terribly wrong.

Free Fire also stars Sharlto Copley (if anyone can make us remember why we liked him in the first place, Wheatley can), Jack Reynor (Sing Street), Sam Riley (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Noah Taylor (Edge of Tomorrow), Babou Ceesay (’71) and Enzo Cilenti (Game of Thrones). All together, the cast makes up a conflicted crew of crooks who get stuck in a warehouse with a bunch of guns when their arms deal goes sideways.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Free Fire centers around an arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Justine (Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen and a gang led by Vernon (Copley) and Ord (Hammer), who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired during the handover, complete pandemonium ensues, with everyone at the scene suddenly thrust into a heart-stopping game of survival.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2017 to see Free Fire. The film was picked up by A24, the studio behind some of this year’s best releases, like The Witch, The Lobster, Green Room, and Swiss Army Man — basically, if you loved a movie this year, chances are A24 released it.

You’ll probably also notice that Martin Scorsese executive produced Free Fire, and that makes a bit of sense if you’re familiar with Wheatley and (co-writer Amy Jump)’s work, which is typically character-driven, darkly farcical, narratively subversive and stylish — and consistently surprising.

Free Fire doesn’t have a specific release date as of yet, but here’s hoping we get to see it sooner rather than later.
