Gordo Defeats ACA to Advance to Class 3A State Baseball Championship
Gordo High School is headed back to the state finals for the first time in six years after beating rival American Christian Academy, 5-2, on Thursday night.
The Greenwave (32-7) won a back-and-forth affair to claim the game three of the series and send the program to Montgomery to take on Piedmont for a Class 3A state championship.
"We knew going into it that the chances of it being a three-game series were very high," head coach Jonathan Pate told Wimp and Barry.
"Both sides knew what was on the line, and both teams competed really hard. I give a lot of credit to ACA's kids. They kept fighting and we were just fortunate right there at the end to get a big key hit."
The victory gives Gordo High School its first trip to a state finals since 2011 after falling just short in recent years. The baseball team has made it to the semifinals three straight years while football did the same in 2014 and 2016.
"We have a huge amount of support from our community, our administration, and the kids have bought into it. And this community expects to win and the kids expect to win. Each year, we tell them we're not practicing for mid-season, we're practicing for the tail end of the season and the kids approach it that way."
