The most common question when it comes to running, how do you pick out the right pair of shoes? We explore this, as we go Inside Tuscaloosa Running!

I'm joined by Ed Freeman, who is the Tuscaloosa Track President and is actively working at a local specialty running store. Ed knows a thing or two about how to point someone in the right direction with shoes

As you know, there are so many options when it comes to running shoes. Not just brands and colors, but types of shoes.  It can be really confusing.

Ed tries to break it down to simple terms, starting with finding which of two styles of shoes fits you!

Two Styles of Running Shoe:

  • Stability shoe - made for people with flatter feet
  • Neutral shoe - made for people with a more normal foot arch

Now, the arch in your foot is one indication on the right type of shoe. Your stride tendency is also a factor.  The sole wear on an older pair of shoes will show how your foot lands when walking/running.

Why does it matter?  Shoes are designed to help normalize and correct the balance of your feet as much as possible. This will help reduce stress on your body and reduce the risk of injury.

Once you have the correct style of running shoe to match your stride, then it comes down to preference on the build with varying amounts of cushioning, all in the pursuit of the perfect run!   This is where knowledgeable assistance from a local running store could really pay off.

Take a look at the video below, as Ed goes into further detail about the styles of shoes and the process to determine the right fit for you!
