The third album from '90s alternative rockers The Smashing Pumpkins is celebrating a birthday! The double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness turns 20 years old today (October 23, 2015).

The goal was to offer fans a broader scope of music, and it could be heard going from tracks like 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' to '1979.'

An instant success topping the Billboard album chart and it landed the band an impressive 7 Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year. The huge popularity of the single '1979' went up for Record of the Year.

Putting a spotlight on the '1979,' the song that almost didn't even make it on the album. How funny is that, not only the album's biggest song, but the biggest hit single in the history of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Billy Corgan, on an episode of VH-1's Storytellers shares the history of the song. Noting how he told the producer that he thought it had a lot of potential, so the producer gave Corgan 24 hours to make it work, or else it wouldn't be on the album. He went home that night and came up with the lyrics, and they recorded it the next day.
