Traveling to the Gulf Coast This Weekend? Be Prepared for Heavy Rain
Many people are headed to the beach for a summer vacation but this week could prove to be unlikely timing with a potential tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Meteorologists are tracking a low-pressure system that could turn into a tropical depression or storm over the next few days. The forecast calls for heavy rain all along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida. It’s very likely that many places will receive 5+ inches of rain with the strongest storms dumping more than 10 inches in some locations.
The National Weather Service offices in Mobile/Pensacola have already warned residents of an elevated risk of flooding across southern Alabama.
The storm is expected to bring rain through Friday and increase the risk high surf and rip tides. Meteorologist James Spann shares his forecast in a blog post here.
The good news, if there is some, is that the storm is unlikely to reach hurricane strength.
If the weather threats extend north into our listening area, we’ll have weather updates throughout the day.
