University of Alabama officials are currently investigating a hate crime after a black student reported finding racist graffiti on his dorm room door.
The student, Freshman Ross Taylor 18, of Fort Worth, Texas, told campus police that he returned to his room in Paty Hall early Saturday Morning to find a swastika drawn on the door below a piece of paper with a racial epithet written on it. Taylor told Tuscaloosa News reporters, “It’s disappointing. It is disheartening because this is my little dream university and two months into the semester this happens.”
Taylor also added that it was the first time that he had encountered racism on campus.
Yesterday, The University Of Alabama issued a statement which read : “UAPD has an active investigation into the incident and will do all it can to identify any suspects. To be clear: there is no place at UA for racism or bigoted behavior. It is reprehensible and unacceptable. We have reached out to the student and taken steps to ensure his personal safety and sense of belonging to campus. It is disappointing there is someone among us whose behavior does not reflect the University’s core values and violates our Capstone Creed. Anyone with any information about this intolerable act should report it to UAPD at 205-348-5454.”
